Artificial Intelligence (AI) is gradually becoming part of school management across Bulgaria, helping administrators improve decision-making, streamline administrative tasks, and support better student outcomes. Principals, head teachers, and education leaders are beginning to use AI-powered tools to analyze school data, automate routine processes, and enhance communication with students and parents. This is highlighted in the World Bank report “Artificial Intelligence in Bulgarian School Education”, for which Albena Spasova, Chair of the Management Board of EdTech Bulgaria, served as a consultant.
These technologies are designed to support school leaders rather than replace them. Administrators remain responsible for key decisions related to student welfare, curriculum, and resource allocation, while AI helps provide insights that make those decisions more informed and efficient.
Practical Use Cases
Several practical use cases of AI are already emerging in Bulgarian schools:
- Student analytics and early warning systems – AI can analyze grades, attendance, and behavioral data to identify students who may be at risk of academic decline or dropping out. By detecting patterns early, school leaders and counselors can intervene with additional academic or social support.
- Administrative automation – AI tools help automate routine tasks such as scheduling classes, managing timetables, generating reports, and processing enrollment data. This reduces administrative workload and allows school leaders to focus more on strategic planning and educational improvement.
- Communication with parents and students – AI chatbots and virtual assistants can answer frequently asked questions about school calendars, enrollment procedures, or school services. These tools can provide information at any time and help reduce the workload of school staff.
- Data-driven planning and policy support – Education authorities can use AI analytics to evaluate national exam results, demographic trends, and workforce needs. These insights help inform long-term education policies and curriculum updates.
Digital platforms already support many of these functions. For example, Shkolo.bg, widely used across Bulgarian schools, serves as an electronic diary and communication platform that tracks attendance, grades, and student performance in real time. Its analytics tools help administrators monitor trends and identify potential risks such as increasing absenteeism.
Global technology providers such as Microsoft and Google are also offering AI-powered solutions for education, including dashboards for data analysis, predictive models for student performance, and administrative tools that support school management.
As Bulgaria continues to integrate digital technologies into education, AI is expected to play an increasingly important role in helping schools operate more efficiently while improving support for students and teachers.
