What should the role of technology in education be?

“The role of technology is not simply to digitalize the learning process, but to expand the possibilities for learning,” said Yana Avramova, Community & Organization Manager at “Social Innovators Bulgaria”, in an interview for our new “Inside View” section. The Inside View presents our community – the people and organizations behind “EdTech Bulgaria” – through their ideas, experience, and perspectives on education and technology. “Social Innovators Bulgaria” is a member of EdTech Bulgaria.

According to her, technology provides “access, personalization, and connectivity”, but should not become an end in itself. “Technology is a tool that helps us achieve educational goals. Without meaning, methodology, and human presence, it remains just a means without real value,” she said.

In the conversation, Avramova also highlighted the skills that are becoming increasingly important with the rise of digital tools and artificial intelligence. In her view, technology develops analytical and critical thinking, while also emphasizing the need for “more human skills such as empathy, emotional intelligence, and effective communication.”

Regarding Bulgarian education, she described the country as being in an “interesting transitional phase” – with growing access to digital tools and innovative practices, but also with challenges related to their implementation. “We also see countries like Finland once again paying attention to fundamental skills such as reading and writing on paper after a period of strong digitalization. This shows that the key is not in the technologies themselves, but in their balance and meaningful use,” she said.

According to Avramova, the main barriers to implementing technology in education are fear of change, lack of confidence, and teacher overload. The solution, she argues, is not simply introducing new tools, but “targeted training, real support, and creating an environment that encourages experimentation and the gradual adoption of new practices.”
